The only way to play a racing game is to play it with a wheel. You just get so much more absorbed into the game. I can play with a keyboard too though. That's the only way I played racing games from 80's to '00. I got my first wheel only a few weeks before getting to play NFS PU. Trying the wheel then, I wouldn't want to turn back to keyboard anymore.
Edit: Hmm, on second thought, I might have used a joystick back in the 80's. Can't remember. With PC it was with keyboard or some sort of flight-yoke & keyboard combo. |

It is interesting, and somewhat surprising, to read about the input devices people prefer and/or use for driving games. The only thing I have ever used a keyboard/mouse setup for is playing WWII armor and mecha simulators. I did not think a person could even really play a driving game that way. I use a joystick and mouse for Mafia because the joystick I have (some Saitek model) has a handle that twists, and it works well to steer while aiming handheld weapons with the mouse. For driving only games, I use a gamepad with those little sticks on it.
I never played a driving simulator before, just games like NFS and DRIVER. Most of the opinions I have read about this seem to indicate that using a gamepad like mine (Saitek P990), while good enough for an arcade driving game, will not be sufficient in a "real" driving game. I hope those wheel-and-pedals setups last long, considering the prices. I wonder if CH Products has this sort of hardware; it seems like their products are known for durability, among other attributes. I guess I am going to get a wheel and pedals regardless. How cool, this is beginning to feel for me. It seems like Motor World Online is going to be my first real driving game experience. By the way, I am new here. Is it a bad idea for me to submit posts this long?

hehe nah never too long. The forum only say it is invalid when it is too short!
as for the part "real" in this statement: Quote:
Anyway, the game wount be imposible for a digital input, but a wheel allows a more exact and smooth input making you have more direct control over the car. And also as someone say over there, the game imersion is way better. Car physics is one of the things that going to get more attention after the alpha realease so, for the alpha keyboard will do. |

It has always puzzled me how on earth are you even able to drive with a gamepad? I think gamepads are a bit new to PC's..
Anyhow, I've tried playing PS3 using its controller. That's one gamepad, isn't it? As a plus, it has some sort of gyro that allows the controller to detect orientation too. The gyro seems inaccurate and the little thumb "joysticks" are so tiny. I'm not dissing gamepads, I'm just curious what makes a PC gamer prefer a gamepad? Maybe it's just what you are being used to, right? Like I said, I started with keyboards and joysticks, then mouse, mouse+keyboard and finally a wheel but I also have a PS3 so I've struggled with that controller too. |

Games like GTA or Driver or even NFS are sadly not playable with a wheel (or at least very hard).
But for almost any other game with a car I use a wheel, it just so much more easier to drive with a wheel. |

Hmmmm........ Some gamepads use a "joystick" like thing but sends digital information like the keyboard. They just make it more confortable that way.
If your gamepad has "Potenciometros" (srry i don't know how they are called in english) it has to be very heavy for that little thing. Resuming : Not all gamepads with a little stick on top of it are ANALOG. Resume N2 : When it comes to driving having accel and steer in separate axis, more over in separate limbs! is a very important thing. Resume N3 : Ah for crying out loud, get a wheel

It's got to be analog. I can drive with a stick (used to use a Sidewinder stick also) or a wheel, or even with a game pad as long as it has one of the thumb sticks, can't do keyboard any more (used to).

More to the simulation side, or a good mix between arcade and simulation would do.
![]() After a while of playing Project Torque, i got myself a Logitech Chillstream gamepad, before that i used mainly a keyboard, and ones in a while if i had the room for it i used my Trustmaster wheel, its old but still working. As of now i dont have any place to hook the wheel up, so the pad it will be. |
