At least the mustang kept 'em on fire til he popped a tire... we used to call that "powerbraking" - Burnouts was what yer car did when you put pedal to the woodgrain and made forward progress. Without a foot on the brake.

I don't understand the point of burnouts/powerbraking, maybe someone could explain it to me.

I would never do this in my car, good tires are expensive and I wouldn't want to replace them after 1 day of messing around when I can have fun with them for a couple years. I suppose if you're using old tires it wouldn't be a big loss.

If you put the pedal to the floor and the tires spin you are doing a burnout. If you need to hold the brake well...

Just a side note here, tires today are somewhat wider than yesteryear especially on sports cars. So don't be so quick to make comparisons that aren't necessarily fair.
