If I was going to get a sporty truck, the best one available stock is probably a Dodge Ram SRT10. But I don't think they've come out with a new one for a couple years now. Too bad, they are quite the beast.

But, if I was looking for something reliable and cheap, I'd have to agree with the Ford F150 suggestion.

Generally, people go diesel for a reason...pulling. A HEMI would pull what most people would haul, though. Just the diesel has tons of torque+headroom for modification which quickly nets tons more torque while still having streetability.

I don't mind trucks, but I like a car myself...heh. I like something zippy and lightweight(comparitivy, my car weights about 3000lbs). Even a truck can be zippy with a diesel or a HEMI tho....or a V10 like that Ram SRT 10 that was mentioned earlier :D .

2004.5 Chevy 2500HD, crew cab, Diesel, Allison tranny, stock at 310 hp. and ~650 pd ft of torque.
As she sits, ~500 hp and over 850 pd.ft. of torque.
~20 mpg. empty or towing 15k lbs. at 70 mph.
Burning waste veg. oil at $2.50 a gallon.

Yup, it costs more to get into it. but.... u gotta pay to play.:D

The F-150 has been the market leader for years - and that is for a good reason. That said, all three of the (former) Big Three have something nice to offer. Dodge Ram has unique big-rig styling and a nice Cummins diesel, Chevy has some nice powertrains across the board, and Ford has really sophisticated styling coupled with a rock-solid frame and premium hardware to get the job done. The F-150 is probably the best "Jack-of-All" trades truck out there, but you really can't go wrong with any of the domestics.

That said, avoid the Toyota Tundra like the plague:

Toyota might be known for its reliability, but the Tundra is not. The Tundra is a half-hearted, rushed, engineering hack job that has cost Toyota huge loss in brand equity because the truck is, in a word: junk. I know you asked about the Tacoma. I can't speak about it. I really know nothing about it. If it has a tin-foil tailgate like the new Tundra though, stay away.

I have a 98 f-150 and I really enjoy it. It still runs great! If you are lookin for sporty I would suggest the lightning version.
