View Full Version : supercharge or turbo?
What would be the best way to soup up a Chevy 3800 V6? a Turbo kit, or a supercharger?

Easiest? Drop in a 3.8 SC from a GTP.
Most power? Any bolt on turbo kit will make more power than a supercharger, but the torque curve will be different, and will require more tuning than a bolt in supercharged motor that already has an ECU that can be plugged right in.

I agree, I have heard experts say that.
Would a 3.8 SC Buick Regal motor fit into a 99 Pontiac Firebird?

The Regal motor-to-Fbody I've seen but...Am I understanding this correctly? Drop in a newer S/C'd FWD engine to an older rear wheel drive setup like buttah? I'm all ears........ ?
Yeah after doing some reading I am stumped myself lol. The super charger on the buick wont clear the oversize window of the firebird. I literally have to cut into the firewall and window area to get it to fit. Oh well, I've been doing a lot of reading that replacing the heads with 3.4 heads from a Grand Prix will give 30-40 horsepower on the 3.8, changing the cam to a performance came from summit and then opening up the exhaust and MAS will get me over 250HP out of a 3.8l engine. Kinda raises an eyebrow considering its all bolt on stuff. I think I could be happy with a car that pumps 250HP at the wheels.
In case anyone is wondering I recently bought a 1999 Firebird for $650. 2 things wrong with it. Blown head gasket, and driver side door is shot. And yes all my friends really HATE me right now lol.

On Thirdgen.org there is a member under the name of 'FirstFirebird' He makes a 3500 top end from a newer car to fit on a 60* V6 block (3.4, 2.8, 3.1) it's roughly $500 plus shipping, and he has his dyno'd over 300 horse, ofcoure you need to add high comp. pistons and a mean cam, but it's a 6..

Nope, this is my girl friend's fathers house where I keep all the toys I can't have in the crappy city of Cincinnati. I do have two cars there. The 1999, and the 1986 Trans Am that you really can't see. The 1979 TA is in the garage. My girls car is 1985 Firebird with the for sale sign hanging from the window. She is looking to get a grand. Hint hint.... lol But anyway it was fathers day, hence all the autos.

Cool, guess it's working now... Ken, checkout Hooker Headers, if you're still thinking about the Buick motor. I know that they do custom fittings for several different motor swaps. I know for sure that they have one for a Buick Turbo-charged V-6, that fits "with just a few small mods," into a '72-'76 Datsun 620 Pick-up.. If they have one for a "Datsun", they may already have one for your T/A! Check'em out . www.the620.com is the address where I found the Datsun mod.

Dunno if this will help you but holden australia put a supercharged version of the series 2 engine in the '95 and up commodores... thats RWD standard... Cant seem to find any decent links to provide you with google is not my friend today... I can tell you theres alot of performance shops in OZ that sell upgrades for them, no doubt they will work on the stateside fronters too.. but ya probably got an abundance of that stuff anyway...

I ran a 144 B&M blower on my 1964 Corvette. You talk about an easy way to wake up a little 355. They are also a very simple bolt on item.
It is the best way to go for cheap and easy Horse Power in my book.:listen:
