Hi. I´ve just been watching the drag racing video on the front page, awesome physics..

I noticed that you can hear the supercharger, nice feature. Heres my question.. Will the engine sound change when you modify it?

Nice to see things coming together.

Fuel.

yes, the idea in the future is to make the engine sound change at different RPMs depending on the parts. And maybe depending on the muflers but still uncertain.

hopfully the sound will change when changing mufflers..

never seen that feature in a game ^^

Well. that's because most developers don't mind on those details. Therically is simple enough. A muffler can be simulated by changing the equalization and volume of the engine.

Yea, its very disappointing in games when you spend time changing exhaust and making it look cool with the same sound :/

I think sound is very important in a racing game, but it is rare to see a game with "real sounding" engine noise.

A other thing i have noticed on driving games in general, is the automatic gearbox, they never act like they do in a real car. They change gear automatic allright but they don´t have the converter effect, that would be nice. Kickdown and all:D

I have no clue on programming at all, so maybe be it is just to difficult to do in a game.

what do you mean by converter effect?

In MWO (even in alpha) the automatic gearbox is simulated as the real one. like in the Intersate game. you use the up/down shift keys to select between P, R,N,D and HI
D is actually a LOW. Recomended using HI mode for racing.

By converter effect I mean slip between engine and gearbox. You know when you drive a automatic in real life, you can rev til engine to 2000 rpm in "D" and the engine will stay about there, while the car accelerates up through the gears. A automatic gearbox is not mechanical connected to the engine like it is on a manual gearbox. You know what I mean?

ah... yeah, that can be done. sounds to me like a sort of autoclutch.

I think he meant the soft acceleration and shifting you get with an automatic transmission due to the torque converter. As opposed to the sometimes rough shifting of a manual.

Correct. That is essentially what a torque converter is.

Well its not quite a clutch.

Image you driving uphill in a manual car, then you need to apply throttle to maintain your speed, but your engine revs dosent climb unless your speed increases.

If you do the same in a automatic car you engine revs will raise though your car isn´t going any faster.

Sometimes thats just cause the auto down shifts..

Exactly.. Kickdown.. But before that happens the engine revs up a little in the current gear, if that is not enough to meet the demand of your right foot, it shifts down.

I prefer a manual anyway. Even if I was drag racing I couldn't stand an auto. That's like the biggest thing I hate about my explorer. (other than my transmission fluid disappearing without a trace)

Yes, If a real automatic gearbox was simulated in a racing game, it would be a huge disadvantage to use instead of a manual.

But it would be nice for cruising:)

That is the only reason to have a cool v8 auto, check out the part at 3:53

Come to think of it, I have never driven a car with an automatic gear box. Even in games I only use auto shifting if I must, or I'm driving with keyboard controls temporarily..

I have started a new thread on the Automatic gearbox.

Just wondering, will more than the mufflers change the sound of the engine? I remember in MCO, different parts wound out different, and when your rings/pistons where going, you could hear it. Also, on a side note a Wedge sounded different than say a 289.

Is this something already taken into consideration? It added quite a bit of 'feel' for the tuner. and consciencious racer.

Just curious, if not, I'd be so humble to suggest if it, if its doable.

BTW, just played in the alpha garage, I'm floored by the feel and polish you guys have achieved so far keep up the excellent on target work guys!!! :D
