How did you manage running XP on a PS3?

Probably the same way it runs on your computer. Just instead of using the PS3's normal operating system he uses Windows. It wouldn't be too difficult if you knew how to do it. Unfortunately I have no idea or any of the new consoles.

the only way ive seen how it can be done so far is by running linux on your ps3 then running xp through that

That's a very strange concept and, from a direct point of view, is technically impossible, since windows isn't open source and there is no cell processor version of windows (the OS would need to have some recoding done and recompiled for the cell processor architecture at the least), however it is feasible if one is running it through a hypervisor or other virtual os system through the ps3 compatible linux distros.

If you were not running it through a hypervisor but through the more traditional method, you would end up with the normal lack of support for things like video cards and sound. So if you have xp running through linux but the drivers in XP are standard vga and standard sound you almost certainly would not be able to (most non-hypervisor virtual system use very basic, generic drivers for the motherboard, sound, vga, etc).

because i dont think mwo currently will run on linux until the full version is out and yes linux will run on the ps3
