i am back with a new computer! finally something with a vid card and a gig of ram!!!! power surge hit my old computer and destroyed EVERYTHING! i had some valuable info on the HDD too :'(

Getting a new computer is always an exciting thing.

yeah. i lost alot of stuff i needed for work. plus 60 or so gigs of music and movies. :-O

There are people who can recover that stuff, for a fee of course. As long as the drive is not crushed or burnt, they can usually get it off and on to a new drive. :D

What Ayce said. If you wanna go DIY route and don't mind doing some research, it's possible only the controller is bad (assuming it was fried, I wouldn't imagine it caused a significant change of bits? Don't know. Weird stuff happens at high voltages.). Controller is the circut board on the bottom of the HD. If you can get the same model HD, some people have been able to swap them out to make the HD work again.

well i took it apart. bad news. everything is black, and the discs themselves are charred, scratched and scraped up pretty bad.
