among the older "pre-merged" military trades there were armourers who handled all sorts of munitions for the Canadian Armed Forces. among these munitions (by virtue of their chemical makeup) were what were known as JATO rockets (Jet Assisted Take-Off). they were solid fuel rocket boosters that mounted on the wings of C-130 Hercules STOL aircraft. with just 2 of these JATO's a fully loaded Herc could launch and be wheels up in less than 150 ft. one of the "urban legends" that these old armourers like to tell is of the poor misguided fool who fastened one of these JATO's to the roof of a car (just for shits and giggles) in an abandoned quarry. apparently this person forgot that solid fuel rockets don't come with an on/off switch; they're either on or off (untill they burn out). unfortunately no-one that I know of has been able to corroborate this story or that they supposedly wiped him off the quarry walls afterwards...:confused:
